THE DEADLINE TO APPLY IS APRIL 30th!
Prior to Filing Your Homestead Exemption
If you have not done so, you will need to update your driver’s license to reflect your new home address. The county will require that you upload your driver’s license and it show the address you’re claiming as your principal residence. You can do that online here: http://www.dps.texas.gov/driverlicense/changes.htm.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why file a homestead?
A homestead exemption discounts part of your house value from taxation, which results in a lower tax bill for you. It also puts a cap on the amount your county can increase the appraised value of your home after year one. So, you’re reducing how much your taxes can be increased over time.
Do I need to do this every year?
No, you only need to do this once. The homestead exemption will remain intact as long as your house remains your principal residence.
How are my taxes determined?
Your property taxes are determined by your county’s appraised value of your home multiplied by the tax rates set by the county officials. Your residential account page will show you the entities that are determining your tax rates.
Can I protest the appraised value?
Yes. Especially if the appraised value is more than you paid for the house. You will receive a tax notice from the county around May that provides your determined appraised value, deadlines for protest, and how to protest.
